Tower of Babel

Many generations after Noah, the whole earth still spoke the same language -- the whole earth had one language and one speech. The descendants of Noah traveled to a plain in the Middle East and settled there. Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. And they said,"Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, so we won't be scattered around the whole earth."

But The Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. And the Lord said,"Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech."

So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called Babel, which means confusion -- because there the Lord multiplied language on the earth, causing people to scatter abroad.

The Tower of Babel is an incredible story that falls in between Noah's flood and the call of Abraham. In the case of the flood, God has initially given up on the whole human race. Mankind had become wicked and his thoughts and inclinations were always evil. God finds in Noah hope for a new beginning, and so we get another shot at it. The rainbow is God's promise to all of the earth that a flood will never again be the tool of judgement.

The call of Abraham comes about as God decides to form a people of his own to carry the knowledge and worship of Him into the world. The Flood did not stem man's evil ways and the activities around the Tower of Babel showed that man loves himself more than God. The glory of man is what was sought with that tower, not the glory of God. So, in Abraham, God forms a people who will glorify Him.

The descendants of Noah spread eastward and found a fertile land called Shinar, which they settled there. They decided to build a city with a tower that can reach heavens -- because they wanted the tower to be a proud monument to themselves and a symbol that would keep them united as a powerful people.

Today, in every nation, we can see distinctive building and monuments that are special to them. For example, in Italy, you can see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, a recognizable landmark of Italy. There are just so many skyscrapers around us nowadays -- Taipei 101 and Petronas Twin Tower, just to name two. In Singapore, we even have a giant Ferris wheel , the Singapore Flyer, constructed on 25 September 2005 and completed on 1 March 2008, which is the tallest in the world.

Leaving In Good Time

Anthony was an intelligent boy who knew many Math answers. However, he is rather a greedy boy. Every morning, before leaving for school, he gets himself some bread and butter, packets of biscuits, lots of fruit and puts it all in his big lunch box.

One morning, he was longer than usual in the kitchen. "Hurry up, Anthony!" his mother cried out. "You will have to run if you don't want to be late for school."

Seeing the time, Anthony began running as fast as his legs could carry him, taking a short cut through the park for speed. And that was where he tripped up on a big stone!

Everything spilled out of his school bag, and without looking or stopping to think, Anthony just crammed the food back inside his lunch box!

Anthony just managed to get to school in time! The teacher was about to revise Algebra word problems with the class. Anthony, on the other hand, was so greedy, he could not wait until this lesson was over. Anthony dislikes Math problems, and he hope time can pass quickly so that he could eat his food.

Looking down at his school bag, he was amazed to see that it was moving! All eyes turned to see where the funny rustling noise was coming from! "A mouse!" cried Anthony in amazement. "How did it get inside my lunch box?" It's nibbling all my food!" How his friends laughed!

"It must have been when I fell over on my way to school," he told them. "Next time, I'll leave a bit earlier!"
